Dr. Heli or the “flying emergency room,” was held at the Civic Welfare Town Square in Jeju City at 11:00 a.m. on December 29, 2022. With the helicopter service, it will be possible to transfer patients from Hallasan Mountain and remote island areas of the province within the golden hour. <Related articles> The launch ceremony, organized and hosted by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, took place in the presence of some 100 attendees including residents and representatives of relevant organizations, such as Oh Young-hoon, Provincial Governor of Jeju; Kim Kyung-hak, Chairman of Jeju Provincial Council; Kim Seong-joong, Director of the Emergency Medical Center at the National Medical Center; Kim Eun-young, Director-General of the Emergency Medicine Division of the Ministry of Health and Welfare; Kim Sung-soo, President of Cheju Halla General Hospital; and Shin Dae-hyun, CEO of Gloria Air. Following a briefing on the progress of the project, there were commemoration, welcome, and congratulatory speeches, a tape-cutting ceremony, and a patient transport demonstration.  During the commemorative address, Provincial Governor Oh Young-hoon said, “Under the special circumstances of our province, which consists of Hallasan Mountain and various oreum (volcanic cones) and islands, we have created the conditions [allowing patient transport] within the golden hour to protect the lives of 700,000 residents and tourists in the event of an accident. […] I ask all related organizations to cooperate to ensure safe operation [of the helicopter], with a strong commitment to protect people’s lives by valuing every single life.”  Kim Sung-soo, President of Cheju Halla General Hospital, stated in his welcome speech, “With the deployment of the Dr. Heli, we have established a three-axis emergency medical system,” and pledged to “take the lead in protecting the precious lives of the provincial residents and tourists visiting Jeju.” The emergency medical helicopter is a state-of-the-art emergency medical system equipped with various types of emergency medical equipment. On board are medical professionals such as emergency medicine specialists and nurses to provide first aid on the scene of an accident or while transporting patients. Since 2011, the Ministry of Health and Welfare has been carrying out the Dr. Heli project across the country. Accordingly, Dr. Heli, launched in Jeju, as the 8th region in the country, will be operated at Cheju Halla General Hospital, which runs a regional emergency medical center and a trauma center and has a helicopter landing pad. Gloria Air, on the other hand, will be in charge of helicopter operation and management. Those who will be transported by helicopter are patients requiring emergency surgery due to severe trauma, myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular disease, and other serious cases, and the helicopter service will be available from sunrise to sunset throughout the year. The helicopter introduced in Jeju is an EC-155B1 model developed in Europe.
