The Gynecologic Cancer Center of Samsung Medical Center received the 'Advanced Ovarian Cancer Surgery' certification from the European Society of Gynecological Oncology (ESGO). This qualification was given for the first time in Asia and will be retained for the next five years.
The certification of the ‘Advanced Ovarian Cancer Surgery’ is attributed to excellent institutions that have passed the evaluation of surgical performance, medical staff, and treatment system conducted by the European Society of Gynecological Oncology.
The multidisciplinary treatment system in the r Gynecologic Cancer Center plays a major role for this achievement. Specialists from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of Pathology and Translational Genomics, Department of Radiology, Division of Hematology-Oncology, and Department of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging comes together to discuss optimal treatment options, and if necessary, specialists from the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Department of Vascular Surgery, Department of Urology, and Department of Thoracic Surgery will come together for surgery.
Furthermore, the Gynecologic Cancer Center is striving to develop new treatments through research. Currently, the center is participating in a 13 joint multi-national and multi-center clinical trial. In particular, the center is continuing research on cancer treatments tailored to the molecular level by discovering new targets and analyzing the mechanism of action and therapeutic effects of molecularly targeted therapy.
With this infrastructure, the Gynecologic Cancer Center of Samsung Medical Center performs approximately 350 ovarian cancer surgeries annually, the most in South Korea.
