Samsung Comprehensive Cancer Center
Samsung Medical Center is home to the nation’s foremost cancer research program. The Samsung Cancer Center which is 11 stories aboveground and 8 stories underground, and having 655 sickbeds was opened in January of 2008. It is run by doctors specializing in the treatment of various types of cancers. As a team, they work to quickly and accurately diagnose and treat cancers by way of excellent diagnostic tools.
The Cancer Center is dedicated to researching new ways of discovering the causes and treatment of many complex cancer disorders. It is equipped with state of the art equipments and tools such as PET-CT, Tomotherapy, IGRT, MR-HIFU etc and offers high tech procedures such as Laparoscopic colorectal resection, Robotic surgery and many others.
The Samsung Cancer Center performed 1,500 cases of colorectal cancer surgeries and 1,800 cases of stomach cancer surgeries in 2008, which were the greatest number to be performed worldwide. The overall survival rate of patients was 73.6% in 5 years. With advanced surgical skills, Samsung Cancer center is recognized worldwide as a premier center for cancer research and treatment.
The Cardiovascular Center operates five specialty teams, focusing on Coronary artery, Cardiac failure, Congenital arrhythmia and Vascular diseases.In collaboration with Mayo Clinic, the Cardiovascular Imaging Center was opened in 2009. SMC was the first in Asia to introduce the exclusive use of the CT and MRI in advanced Cardiac Imaging. For most patients who had undergone a Percutanerous Coronary
Intervention (PCI), it is now possible to safely discharge from the hospital on the same day. Furthermore, outstanding results were attained in Chronic Coronary Occlusion, while 90% of Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) was performed without extracorporeal circulation and a success rate of 99% was seen in 3000 cases. Aortic Valve Replacement was performed on 400 patients and to date, a 0% of death rate has been maintained.

The Center for children and adolescent medicine in Samsung Medical Center has all divisions including the Pediatric and Adolescent Division, and the Pediatric Divisions of Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology. The Center provided the world-standard treatment in all these areas.
Samsung Medical Center, which aims to become a globally leading hospital, has been promoting active interaction with various distinguished medical institutes worldwide including Mayo Clinic(US), MD Anderson Cancer Center(US), and Beijing University Hospital. Since 2009, the Hospital is also promoting fullscale activities to attract foreign patients, which comprise a dynamic force for Korea’s new growth.
The Hospital is particularly focusing on direct consultation with foreign governments, signing memorandom of understanding with the Mongolian Embassy in Korea(July. 2009), Vladivostok City(Aug. 2009), Dubai(June. 2010) and Almaty, Kazakhstan(Aug.2010).
