Meeting with a Korean nun
In October 2014, a Korean nun Geum-Ja Seok, who was doing missionary work in Lima, Peru, were casually visiting his school and heard of his pitiful story. Her earnest request for therapeutic support was delivered to Korean government officials and finally the Asan Medical Center, a medical institution capable of providing high-quality surgery and medical treatment. The Asan Medical Center decided to invite Anshelo to Korea and support all treatment. After ten long years, a miracle happened to the boy.
The last hope in the foreign country
On November 11, 2015, at 10 am, Anshelo found himself on the surgical table. Proficient plastic surgeons(Prof. Junpyo Hong, Jongwoo Choi, and Hyeonseok Seo) and a neurosurgeon(Prof. Yeongsin Na) participated in the major surgery that took over 15 hours. They performed a reconstruction of his skull and blood vessels on the left part of the head that were lost to flames and a skin graft on his left arm skin, losing his motor function.
First, the meninges were separated from the brain and the damaged area of the left temporal lobe (12.5cm x 11cm) was reconstructed to fill the defect. A metal mesh(Titanium mesh) was placed over the material that filled the area of the deficit. Next, the blood vessel removed from the his ankle was grafted on the head. The skin from his thighs was grafted on the head. Additionally the burned skin on the left arm was rebuilt with healthy skin. Plastic reconstruction was also performed so that the left hand can allow him to have a prosthetic hand.
Miracle in 100 Days
The medical team faced another problem during the transplantation of the scalp and blood vessels due to another blood clotting disorder that nobody knew until the operation. Because of his disthesis, they struggled to overcome it. Finally, thanks to their endless efforts, reconstructive plastic surgery was successfully completed.
Anshelo from Peru
102 days. It is the time that Anshelo sent at the Asan Medical Center in Korea. His appearance completely changed. The head became firm, the spotted skin turned into a clean and healthy skin, and a new left arm appeared. The boy, who came from Peru, was delighted to hear that now he could go back to his home. Anshelo returned to his homeland with the hope of becoming a doctor and treating people in need of treatment.
